Boys’ Matchplay Championship

The 18-hole Final of the 2008 Boys’ Matchplay Championship was contested on the afternoon of Sunday 17th August by Graeme McDougall (Bishopbriggs) who beat David Shields (Haggs Castle) and Jamie Thomson (Cawder) who was victorious over Scott Wearing (Bishopbriggs) in the morning semi-finals.

After 10 holes Graeme, playing on his home course, was 3 up but an eagle 2 by Jamie at the 11th followed by a three putt from Graeme at the 12th and a wayward drive at the 13th which saw him lose to two pars by Jamie brought the match back to square.

Graeme edged ahead at the 16th when Jamie missed the green with his second and took 5 to Graeme’s par 4. Jamie however again squared the match at the 17th. Jamie’s tee shot at 18 found trouble on the left but after chipping out he found the green in 3.

Graeme, on the green in 2, two putted for a par 4 and Jamie holed a long putt to keep the match alive. At the first extra hole Jamie safely made the green in 2 while Graeme, having put his tee shot close to the trees was unable to get home in regulation. His chip left him short of the hole and a missed putt allowed Jamie to take the title with a par 4.
